James “Jim” O'Brien
born:
1937, died: March 13, 2022, Age: 85 - Essex, Ireland
Patrick O'Brien, son of Jim
O'Brien posted on USA Checkers Facebook, June 24, 2022 a tribute to his Farther: My father James O'Brien
who was a great Irish checker player who once beat Derek Oldbury and Pat Mccarty
passed away on the 13th March. He was a modest and humble man, who even a few
months ago suffering from terminal cancer was still studying draughts every
evening even though he hadn't entered a tournament for over 10 years. He won
many titles and helped Essex to the county championship. I guess many wouldn't
remember my father as sadly draught players of his time are few and far between
now. He had an annoying habit of holding his own against the great players and
when the trophy was in view would lose a silly game. The amount of times he just
missed out were many but win lose or draw he would be back on the practice board
the same night he came home.
I am sure somewhere out there the board is out and
the battles have resumed. Jim O'Brien (1937-2022) 85
It's very sad, however I have all my dad's Draughts books but don't know where to
begin in getting them to the right people. My dad, Jim O'Brien asked us as a
family to make sure they go to draughts players and all proceeds will be donated
to the Hospice that treated my dad. I have over 100 books with some dating back
to the early twentieth century. I have no idea of value or how to make sure they
get into the right hands. I have no interest in ebay or other selling sites just
the people who can appreciate them and maybe learn from them. Any advice would
be very much appreciated. Thank you.
